// ABOUT

ABOUT

Hi, I'm Jan - a musician and maker based in Hamburg. TŒRN started as a personal itch: I wanted a sequencer and sampler that feels like an instrument first, and a computer last - less buttons, less screen, less cables and less studio-feeling. Over the last years I’ve been prototyping, breaking, rebuilding, and testing it until it became something I genuinely love to play.

TŒRN is small-batch and still evolving. If you jump in now, you're joining early: you’ll find a few rough edges, but also a project with heart, openness, and lots of room to grow. If you like building, tweaking, or adding features, I’d love your help - feel free to contribute.

TŒRN is a standalone, open-source live performance sequencer - ready to operate on battery. Built to be played in motion - not prepared in advance.

No laptop. No DAW. No preparation freeze. Build patterns. Break them. Save them. Keep playing. Everything happens while the clock is running. Patterns and sounds evolve inside the performance, not before it.

Key Features

01. VISUAL FEEDBACK

16x16 RGB Matrix

Get ready for a blast of nostalgia mixed with cutting-edge tech. Paint your music with light. The 16x16 RGB LED grid isn't just for sequencing-it's a futuristic canvas for modulation and performance. Each LED can display pattern data, modulation values, effects states, and more, creating a visual representation of your music in real-time. Custom color schemes let you tailor the grid to your set.

You can extend the display from 16x16 to 32x16 with an additional display module (in development, not available yet). 5V WS2812 LED strips for performance use can be connected externally via the onboard connector.

  • EXTEND 16X16 → 32X16 (ADD-ON MODULE, IN DEV)
  • STRIPS 5V WS2812 VIA EXTERNAL CONNECTOR
  • COLOR CUSTOM COLOR SCHEMES
02. PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy

No laptop. No DAW. No preparation freeze. Build patterns. Break them. Save them. Keep playing.

CC BY-NC Hardware. Made by makers, for makers.

03. SEQUENCER

Live Sequencing as an Instrument

Live recording, trimming & reverse. 16-bar patterns across 16 pages with up to 999 patterns storage. Real-time pattern switching, mutes, solo & transposition. Probability, conditions & generative tools for evolving sequences. No stop button thinking - everything happens while the clock is running.

Load, exchange & save patterns during playback. Load, swap & save sample packs live. SD-based browser with folders, preview & instant access. Patterns and sounds evolve inside the performance, not before it.

  • STORAGE 999 PATTERNS / 999 SOUND-PACKS / 999 SAMPLES
  • TRIGGERS PROBABILITY (0-100%) & CONDITION-TRIGS
  • LIVE OPERATIONS LOAD/SAVE PATTERNS & SAMPLES DURING PLAYBACK
  • PATTERN PLAY REAL-TIME SWITCHING, MUTES, SOLO
  • BROWSER SD-BASED WITH FOLDERS & PREVIEW
04. I/O

Connectivity

MIDI in/out: send clock, notes, or both. Internal or external sync. Play standalone or drive external gear. Battery-powered for true portability - built to be played in motion, not prepared in advance.

USB-C provides both power and data transfer. TRS MIDI In/Out ports (3.5mm, Type A only) for seamless integration. Professional 6.35mm jacks for headphones, line-out, mic-in & live sampling. Optional 1500mAh LiPo battery for standalone operation.

  • MIDI IN/OUT - CLOCK / NOTES / BOTH (TYPE A)
  • SYNC INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL
  • AUDIO I/O 6.35MM JACKS
  • BATTERY 1500MAH LIPO (OPTIONAL)
05. SOUND ENGINE

Sound Engine

44.1 kHz / 16-bit / mono. Focused, punchy, stable - built for live play. Mono output by design: direct, centered, stage-ready. Line-out, mic-in & live sampling.

8 sample tracks with trimming & reverse. WAV sample support via SD Card with up to 12 seconds CD-quality per voice.

  • SAMPLE VOICES 8 VOICES
  • SAMPLE FORMAT 44.1KHZ / 16-BIT / MONO
  • SAMPLE LENGTH UP TO 12S PER VOICE
  • SYNTH VOICES 3 ENGINES (POLY + MONO)
06. EFFECTS CHAIN

Effects You Actually Play

All effects are designed for live use, not post-processing. Filters (LP / HP / BP) with resonance. Reverb with wet/dry control. Bitcrusher (bit depth + sample-rate reduction, loudness compensated). Fast per-channel access - effects are part of the performance.

  • EFFECTS ADSR / FILTER / BITCRUSHER / REVERB
07. LIVE RECORDING

Live Recording

Record directly into TŒRN with 8-channel live-looping capabilities. Each voice can record up to 12 seconds of audio, which can then be fully sequenced, modified, and transposed. Two recording modes are available: touch-hold-activated recording for hands-on control, and one-shot recording for quick captures.

Live monitoring is available so you can hear your input signal while recording. Choose from multiple input sources: 6.35mm microphone jack for external mics, built-in internal microphone for quick sampling without extra hardware, or line-in for recording from external audio sources. Both input and output levels are fully adjustable, giving you complete control over your recording signal chain.

  • LIVE MONITORING AVAILABLE
  • INPUT SOURCES 6.35MM MIC / BUILT-IN MIC / LINE-IN
  • I/O LEVELS ADJUSTABLE
08. OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE

Open Source Hardware

Based on Teensy 4.1 and Arduino. MIT licensed - free and open to explore, change, and play around. Multiple free I/O pins plus power and GND are brought out to free-to-use JST connectors (5V and 3V), so you can build your own extensions: LEDs, triggers, clocks, CV/Gate, and more. USB-host and other capabilities open the door to custom hardware and experiments.

  • PLATFORM TEENSY 4.1 / ARDUINO
  • LICENSE MIT
  • EXPANSION FREE I/O + 5V/3V VIA JST
  • EXTENSIONS LEDS / TRIGGERS / CLOCKS / CV-GATE / USB-HOST
09. SYNTHESIS

Three Synth Voices

One three-voice polyphonic synth with 3 oscillators per voice, and two monophonic synths with 2 oscillators each. Subtractive synthesis architecture with full ADSR envelope control, LFO modulation, and arpeggiator (beta). Routed through the complete effects chain.
